How does one pyrolysis process serve five sectors?
When biomass is pyrolysed in an oxygen-free environment, three product phases are obtained: biochar as the solid phase, pyroligneous acid as the liquid phase and wood tar as the heavy fraction. The distinct structure of each phase answers the problems of a different sector. The organic waste recycling chain in municipalities is one example: wood tar coats the inner surfaces of waste containers, pyroligneous acid is used for disinfection, and compost enriched with biochar and pyroligneous acid becomes fertiliser for the municipality's plants.
Biochar (solid phase)
Its porous carbon structure retains water and nutrients in the soil, acts as a toxin binder in feed and stores carbon stably in the soil for hundreds or even thousands of years. Agriculture · Livestock · Carbon & Climate
Pyroligneous Acid (liquid phase)
A natural liquid containing acetic acid, phenols and ketones. With its antibacterial, antiseptic and deodorising properties it is used for plant growth, as a feed and drinking-water additive and for surface hygiene. Agriculture · Livestock · Hygiene
Wood Tar (heavy fraction)
Its phenolic compounds and resinous structure form a water-repellent layer that reduces oxygen permeability on the treated surface: container, wood and metal protection, grafting and pruning paste, skin care for animals. Industry · Agriculture · Livestock
