What is a biorefinery?

One feedstock, three product families.

An oil refinery separates crude oil into many different products. A biorefinery applies the same idea to biomass: instead of spending the feedstock on a single product, it sends each fraction to its own use.

At V-Pyro, the feedstock is agricultural waste such as olive pits, walnut shells and apricot kernels. This waste is broken down without oxygen by pyrolysis: biochar in the solid phase, pyroligneous acid (wood vinegar) in the liquid phase and wood tar in the heavy fraction.

What closes the loop is that the products return to where they came from. Biochar holds moisture and nutrients in the soil and stores carbon for a long time; pyroligneous acid supports plant growth, livestock farming and hygiene; wood tar protects wood and metal. Waste thus becomes the raw material for new production.

For municipalities

A city's organic waste can join the same cycle.

Our products are made from agricultural waste. The same pyrolysis cycle also offers a model for the organic waste that municipalities collect: the waste is collected, processed by pyrolysis, and the products are used in the city again.

  1. A

    Collecting and sorting

Waste collected by refuse teams is sorted and dried.

  2. B

    Grinding and pyrolysis

The waste is ground and the recycling process begins in pyrolysis reactors.

  3. C

    Three products

Pyrolysis yields pyroligneous acid, wood tar and biochar.

  4. D

    Containers and disinfection

Wood tar coats the inner surfaces of refuse containers, while pyroligneous acid is used for disinfection (Natural Disinfectant), eliminating the need for toxic chemicals.

  5. E

    Compost

The water used in this process contains no chemical toxins and is enriched with pyroligneous acid, so together with biochar it is highly beneficial for the municipality’s compost production.

  6. F

    The city's plants

Compost enriched with biochar and pyroligneous acid is used as a 100% natural and harmless fertiliser on plants grown and maintained by the municipality.

Award

An award for the circular economy.

With our CWTI (Circular Waste Transformation Initiative) project, which converts waste by pyrolysis and produces biochar, wood vinegar and syngas, we won the “Circular Economy Transformation” award in the SME category of the Sustainable Business Awards 2024 as VELDO Makine AR-GE.

Recycling Organic Waste by Pyrolysis

A short video (in Turkish) on how agricultural waste such as olive pits, walnut shells and apricot kernels is collected and dried at the V-Pyro pyrolysis plants, then processed without oxygen into wood vinegar, wood tar and biochar.
